Young people may be able to improve their career prospects by taking a gap year, it has been suggested.
According to Directgov, taking a gap year can look good on your CV.
So even if getting a job seems like a long way off, it can be a beneficial experience in terms of future employment.
"Potential employers see that you have spent time broadening your horizons and learning new skills," the public information portal said.
Participating in voluntary work placements can have a similar effect, Directgov added.
"Volunteering for an industry or organisation you would like to get into in the future shows employers that you are dedicated to advancing your career," it stated.
"If you want to return to college or university, a gap year shows that you are committed to your education. You may find that you approach learning in a different way after a year out."
